DURBIN'S HISTORIC CASTAWAY CABOOSE

An exciting addition to the many lodging options in the valley

the CASTAWAY CABOOSE
Caboose #2849 was built in April 1952 by the Wabash Railroad in the Decanter, Illinois shops, the last one to be built in the Decatur shops.

Original Paint Scheme

After the merger of the Norfolk and Western in 1964, the prefix #56 was added the 2849 and first operated with the blue and yellow paint scheme as shown in this B&W photo.

In 1985 Mr. Fitzhugh Brown of Pittsburgh, PA visited the N&W yard in Peru, Indiana and selected the #562849 as the best of several cabooses. The caboose was delivered to the Lofton, Virginia siding in May, 1985. Brown then had it trucked to his property beside the St. Mary's Wilderness Area in the George Washington National Forest. Kevin Armstrong bought the property including the caboose in 1995. In October 2002, Jay and Cathy East became the 5th owners of the caboose and moved it to Durbin, West Virginia, on December 27, 2002 with this 2nd NW paint scheme.
