West Fork Rail Trail - TR312 (map)
This converted Western Maryland railroad bed offers access to a more remote section of the Greenbrier watershed. This quiet 26 mile stretch provides an excellent backcountry experience. The trail parallels the West Fork of the Greenbrier almost its entire length. You can watch the river grow from a small trickle at the Lynn Divide, fish in cool summer shadows, swim in sunny pools.
Durbin, at the southern end provides perfect access and supplies. The trail surface is crushed limestone and is also nearly flat. Backpacking and camping are popular here. Loop opportunities off Burner and Allegheny Mountains offer two day hikes and all day bike riding.
Greenbrier River Trail operated by West Virginia State Parks, is a 75 mile (120 kilometer) long former railroad, now used for hiking, bicycling, ski-touring, and wheel-chair use. The former Greenbrier Division of the C. & O. Railway was built at the turn of the century to serve the booming timber industry of that time. The trail passes through numerous small towns and traverses 35 bridges and 2 tunnels as it winds its way along the valley. Throughout much of its length, the Trail is directly adjacent to the beautiful Greenbrier River and is surrounded by peaks of the Allegheny Mountains.
